Kids and Youth Size Chart Explained: How to Choose the Right T-Shirt Size

Kids grow fast. Sometimes really fast.

One minute their favorite wildlife tee fits perfectly. The next, it looks as though it has been through a mysterious shrinking experiment.

And then there are the labels: XS, S, M, L, XL, Youth 10–12, Age 12–14, Adult XS...

What do they all mean?

The good news is that choosing the right kids' or youth T-shirt size is much easier once you know what to look for. Age can point you in the right direction, but height, chest measurement and the actual measurements of the T-shirt are far more useful.

Here is our simple guide to understanding kids, tween and teen sizes, so your young explorer has the freedom to climb, discover, wander and get wonderfully muddy without fighting with an uncomfortable T-shirt.

There is no magic birthday when a child suddenly changes from a "kid" size to a "teen" size.

Children grow at very different rates.

Two 12-year-olds can be the same age but have completely different heights, builds and T-shirt sizes. That is why many clothing size guides use a combination of:

  • age

  • height

  • chest measurement

  • waist measurement

  • numeric size

  • letter size such as XS, S, M, L and XL

Size.ly, for example, recommends using height and chest measurements rather than age alone, because brands can cut their clothing differently.

That is the first rule of youth sizing:

Age is a guide. Measurements help you find the fit.

XS vs Age-Related Sizes: What's the Difference?

You may see one T-shirt marked Youth XS and another marked Age 5–6 or Size 6.

They may be intended for roughly the same stage of growth — but that does not guarantee that the shirts are the same size.

Youth clothing commonly uses two systems.

Letter sizes

These normally look like:

XS → S → M → L → XL

Number or age sizes

These may look like:

6–8, 10–12, 14–16

or simply:

Age 7–8, Age 9–10, Age 11–12

The tricky part is that manufacturers do not all use exactly the same measurements.

For example, one youth chart may place a child of a certain age in Small while another brand places that same age in XS. Published children's size charts also show noticeable differences between brands and sizing systems.

So don't worry too much about what the letter should mean.

Check what that letter means on the size chart for the actual shirt you want to buy.

Kids Standard Measurement Chart

The chart below is a general youth size guide, not a guarantee that every clothing brand will use exactly these measurements.

Youth Size Approx. Age Height Chest
XS 5–6 years 107–119 cm 61–64 cm
S 6–7 years 119–132 cm 64–69 cm
M 8–10 years 132–145 cm 69–76 cm
L 12–14 years 145–157 cm 76–84 cm
XL 16–18 years 157–170 cm 84–91 cm

These figures are useful as a starting point and are based on general youth sizing ranges.

But there is an important catch.

Look at different manufacturers and the age ranges change.

For example, one published kids' T-shirt chart lists Youth XS at approximately ages 3–5 and Youth XL at 11–13, while other youth charts extend XL into the mid-to-late teen years.

That is exactly why measurement beats guessing by age.

Measurement Differences: Body Size vs T-Shirt Size

Here's one of the most important things to understand when reading a kids' size chart:

Body measurements and garment measurements are not the same thing.

A chart showing a chest measurement of 76 cm, for example, may mean the measurement around the child's body.

A T-shirt manufacturer may instead show the width of the actual shirt when laid flat.

Those numbers will look completely different.

For example, the Gildan Youth Ultra Cotton T-Shirt lists its flat chest widths as:

Youth Size T-Shirt Width Laid Flat T-Shirt Length
XS 16 in / 40.6 cm 20.5 in / 52.1 cm
S 17 in / 43.2 cm 22 in / 55.9 cm
M 18 in / 45.7 cm 23.5 in / 59.7 cm
L 19 in / 48.3 cm 25 in / 63.5 cm
XL 20 in / 50.8 cm 26.5 in / 67.3 cm

These are garment measurements, measured across the shirt while it is lying flat.

So before comparing numbers, check whether the size chart says:

"Body measurement"
or
"Garment measurement / laid flat."

Mixing up the two can send your sizing calculations straight into the wilderness.

How to Understand Which Size to Choose?

You don't need complicated calculations.

One of the easiest and most reliable methods is to grab a T-shirt your child already loves wearing.

The favorite-shirt method

  • Choose a T-shirt that currently fits your child well.

  • Lay it flat on a table or other smooth surface.

  • Smooth out any wrinkles.

  • Measure straight across the chest, just below the armpits.

  • Measure from the highest shoulder point down to the bottom hem.

  • Compare those measurements with the garment size chart for the T-shirt you want to order.

This method is recommended by several apparel sizing guides because you are comparing a known comfortable shirt with the new shirt, rather than trying to guess from an age label.

Simple.

How to Measure Your Child

If you don't have a good-fitting T-shirt to compare, measure your child instead.

For T-shirts, the two most useful measurements are usually height and chest.

Height

Ask your child to stand:

  • barefoot

  • with their back against a wall

  • standing naturally and looking straight ahead

Measure from the floor to the top of their head.

Chest

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of the chest, usually just below the armpits.

Keep the tape:

  • level

  • comfortably close to the body

  • not pulled tight

If the clothing chart also asks for waist or hips, measure those too.

Nike's youth sizing guide, for example, uses height, chest, waist and hip measurements and advises shoppers who fall between two sizes to choose according to the fit they prefer.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Tweens and Teens

This is where things can get interesting.

Tweens and teens grow at different speeds, and their proportions begin changing too. A young teen may fit comfortably into a Youth XL, while another child of exactly the same age may already prefer an Adult XS or Small.

Is Youth XL the Same as Adult Small?

Not necessarily.

They can overlap in size, but the shape of the garment may be different.

Youth T-shirts are designed around children's proportions. Adult shirts normally have:

  • a longer body

  • longer sleeves

  • different shoulder proportions

  • different chest-to-length proportions

That means a Youth XL should not automatically be treated as another name for Adult Small.

A youth shirt may fit well across the chest but be shorter through the body. An adult shirt may provide the length a taller teenager needs but feel different around the shoulders or torso.

For a tween or teen close to the top of youth sizing, it is worth comparing:

Youth L or XL

with

Adult XS or S

using the actual garment measurements.

What If Your Child Is Between Two Sizes?

First decide how you want the shirt to fit.

For a more fitted look, the smaller size may work.

For a relaxed fit, or a little growing room, choose the larger size.

Nike similarly recommends using the smaller option for a tighter fit and the larger option for a looser fit when measurements sit between sizes.

For active kids, a little extra room is often useful.

After all, Africa Wild Children have important things to do.

Trees need climbing. Trails need exploring. Bugs need investigating.

Don't Buy a Huge Size Just to "Grow Into It"

A little growing room is useful.

A T-shirt that is several sizes too large is another story.

Oversized shirts can have:

  • shoulder seams hanging too far down the arms

  • sleeves that interfere with movement

  • excess fabric around the body

  • a neckline that feels too loose

  • artwork sitting lower than intended

If you want room for growth, moving one size up is usually more sensible than jumping several sizes ahead.

Why Size Charts Can Look Different Between Brands

There is no single worldwide children's clothing size standard used identically by every manufacturer.

Even familiar labels such as Small and Medium can represent different measurements.

International sizing adds another layer.

US children's clothing commonly uses numbers and age-related sizes, while European children's sizing often relates more closely to the child's height in centimeters.

And that's before the very youngest sizes come into the picture. If you've ever puzzled over labels like 2T versus 24 months, you are not alone. We cover that in detail in 2T vs 24M: No More Size Guesswork.

So a size your child wears in one brand, country or T-shirt style may not translate perfectly into another.

This is normal.

It doesn't mean somebody made the chart incorrectly.

It simply means the measurements matter more than the label.

Five Easy Rules for Choosing a Kids' T-Shirt Size

If all those numbers are starting to feel like homework, remember these five things:

  • Don't choose by age alone. Kids of the same age come in wonderfully different shapes and sizes.

  • Check whether the chart shows body or garment measurements.

  • Measure a favorite T-shirt whenever possible.

  • For tweens and teens, compare youth and adult measurements if they are near the top of the youth range.

  • If between sizes, think about fit and growth before choosing.

And most importantly:

Always use the size chart provided for the particular garment you are buying.

Ready for the Next Adventure?

Choosing the right kids' or youth T-shirt size shouldn't require a degree in advanced mathematics.

Age gives you a starting point. Measurements give you confidence.

Grab a favorite tee, lay it flat, take two quick measurements and compare them with the product size chart. It is one of the easiest ways to find a comfortable fit, especially for fast-growing tweens and teens.

Because once the sizing is sorted, your young wild child can get back to the important stuff: being curious, getting outside and discovering just how extraordinary the wild world really is.
