The savanna elephant is the largest land animal on Earth, weighing up to seven tons and roaming grasslands and open woodlands across much of sub-Saharan Africa.

When elephants push over trees, strip bark, and break branches, they prevent grasslands from turning into dense forests. This process keeps open habitats available for antelope, zebra, wildebeest, and countless other species that depend on grassy plains.

During dry seasons elephants dig into riverbeds and expose hidden groundwater, creating watering holes that sustain entire communities of animals. In many ways, savanna elephants are the architects of Africa's iconic landscapes.

Deep in the rainforests of Central Africa lives the savanna elephant's quieter cousin: the African forest elephant.

Forest elephants are sometimes called "gardeners of the Congo Basin." As they feed on fruit, they disperse seeds across vast distances through their dung. Some scientists estimate that up to 30% of tree species in Central African forests depend on elephants for seed dispersal.

By thinning dense vegetation and promoting the growth of large, slow-growing trees, forest elephants may increase the forest's ability to store carbon, helping regulate the planet's climate. One study suggests that a single forest elephant can influence carbon capture across hundreds of acres of forest habitat.

In other words, protecting elephants may also help protect the global climate.
